Industrialists urge govt to share in workers' training

A programme to train workers of the knitwear and garments industry costing Rs 28,000 a worker has evaporated the enthusiasm of industrialists and they have written to the ministry of textile to share 50 percent of the cost; sources said here on 13th March.

The industrialists have agreed, half-heartedly, to the proposal if the government shares 50 percent. They are still hesitant to adopt the idea; the sources said.

Federal Secretary Textile Masood Alam Rizvi had visited associations of knitwear and garments sectors last week and had assured the industry of the government's commitment to provide assistance, including financial support, for this project to be implemented through private-public partnership. TOP

'3rd International Textile Asia Exhibition' starts on March 18

The '3rd International Textile Asia Exhibition' at Expo Center has been inaugurated by the Federal Minister for textile, Mushtaq Ali Cheema here on 18th March, sources said here on March 19.

Further on the occasion of the inauguration, the minister said that the government of the country would give incentives to the textile garment industries, including exemption of taxes and reduction of utility charges.
 
The exhibition was visited by Chinese Consul General Sun Chunye, Chairman All Pakistan Textile Manufacturers Association (APTMA) Ali Khan and others.

The garment manufacturer and exporter industries needed modern machinery and technology to boost the production. Further textile industry had made investment of $5.5 billion in BMR and expansion of production capacities in the last few years. TOP

Cotton prices stay firm despite low demand

Cotton market on March 14 showed quietly steady trend as official spot rates were firmly held at the overnight levels in the absence of strong mill demand.

But in physical trading much of the activity remained confined to low-mic lots from the central Sindh cotton belt but most of the deals both in Sindh and Punjab varieties were finalized below Rs2,500 per maund, dealers said.

As the tender date of March 16, for the TCP's 50,000 bales is drawing nearer spinners prefer to keep to the sidelines rather than indulging in big deals, they said. TOP

LCCI urges govt to adopt immediate measures for knitwear industry

The high input cost of utilities and high rate of export refinance are the main reason behind the closure of 134 knitwear units, rendering 23,637 people jobless, the Lahore Chamber and Commerce and Industry president Mian Shafqat Ali said here on March 20.  

The president expressed his views at the meeting held at LCCI with a delegation of Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers Association and also urges government to take immediate measures to save the knitwear industry which is fast heading towards closure. TOP

Textile City mega project to be completed by June next year

The mega project of Textile City would will be completed by June next year at a cost of Rs six billion. Chief Executive Officer of Textile City Limited, Zaheer Hussain announced this during a press briefing held here as part of "Textile Asia-2006" Exhibition and Conference at Karachi Expo Centre on March 19.

The project will be erected on an area of 1250 acres. It will also have housing facilities for workers on additional 500 acres land located near the project. The additional land was acquired with the help of provincial Government; he added. In order to meet water requirements, a water pipeline from K-III project would be provided to the Textile City by the provincial Government. Textile Commissioner Muhammad Idrees Ahmed said another project of Textile Garments would also be established in the vicinity of Textile City .

Through value addition the Textile Garments will add $400 million to the existing exports of the country besides offering 60000 job opportunities to the people; he told the mediamen. This project will prepare high-value woven and knit garments. TOP

Textile entrepreneurs not satisfied over 19 pct rise in exports

The textile entrepreneurs in the country are not satisfied over 19 per cent increase in exports during last eight months as they assumed the growth must have been doubled, keeping in view the textile sector has undergone large-scale expansion in the last few years, Commerce Minister Humayun Akhtar Khan said here on March 24.

The minister further said that the exports from the country have registered a record figure of $ 10.6 billion during eight months (July-February 2005-06) showing an increase of 19.7 per cent over the corresponding period of last year. TOP

20 textile units to shift to Bangladesh

As many as 20 textile units have finally decided to shift their production units to Bangladesh in an aggressive move to cut their production cost. They say that the production cost is almost half of that of Pakistan as Bangladesh has offered a tax-free investment opportunity to the Pakistani textile industry; sources said here on March 27.

They said the offer of a tax free-investment has attracted some of the prominent textile industrialists, who now plan to shift their production units. Representatives of different textile associations claimed about 20 units of bed linen, readymade garments and knitwear had finalized plans to shift to Bangladesh and it could take a month or two to set up or acquire any of the already running units in Bangladesh . However, the situation has pushed the authorities of government of Pakistan to offer incentives to the over $8 billion-export industry, otherwise it could trigger capital flight from the country.

The bedwear exporters witnessed a sharp decline in orders from European countries after the EU in March 2004 imposed a 13.1 percent anti-dumping duty on imports from Pakistan , claiming the cheap Pakistani products were harming the local textile industries. Pakistan , which entered the WTO regime in January 2005, is among top five textile goods exporters of the world. On an average, the country exports textile products worth more than $8 billion every year. TOP

Export of textile goods up by 20 pct

Pakistan 's export of textile products rose by 20.18 per cent to $6.323 billion during the eight months of the current fiscal year as against $5.261 billion the same period of last year. Official figures released by Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS) here on March 24 showed that the increase was mainly attributable to growth achieved in the export of readymade garments during the month of Feb 2006.

The export of readymade garments surged 33.15 per cent to $872.276 million during Feb 2006 as against $655.125 million over the same month last year. A decrease of 18.30 per cent was recorded in export of readymade garments during Jan 2006 and 4.92 per cent in December 2005 over the corresponding months of the last year. The export of bedwear grew by 65.72 per cent, cotton yarn by 28.95 per cent, cotton cloth by 159.30 per cent, knitwear by 1.96 per cent and towels by 12.69 per cent during the eight months of the current fiscal. However, the export of tents, canvas and tarpaulin declined by 71.42 per cent, art, silk, synthetic textile by 38.17 per cent and made-up articles by 14.35 per cent. The export of carpets, rugs increased by 2.91 per cent, sports goods by 8.33 per cent, engineering goods by 11.80 per cent, auto parts by 60.08 per cent, leather manufacturers by 46.4 per cent, footwear by 22.4 per cent, chemical and pharmaceutical products by 9.80 per cent during the period.
