Cotton prices fall on less demand
Cotton prices continued to head downwards in yesterday's trading activities. New York's March contract was hit by increased selling and no sight of any rallies. Indian prices are also down with lack of export interest whilst Pakistan is expecting prices to shortly increase on mill and spinner demand. TOP
US imports of carded and combed cotton yarns decline in 2005
US imports in both the carded and combed cotton yarn categories were lower throughout 2005 than during 2004. There were also double-digit price cuts in the two categories over the year. Pakistan was leading supplier in the two categories although carded cotton yarn shipments were much reduced from last year. TOP
Hong Kong clothing re-exports successfully resisted in 2005
Hong Kong clothing trade was not dramatically affected by the elimination of textile quotas in 2005. Shipments however declined in the second part of the year before falling at a lower pace in December. This is a first sign of a possible rebound in 2006, after US and EU reimposed quotas on imports from China. TOP
EU wants compulsory "made in" labels by 2007
Imports of apparel, textile and footwear into the European Union could soon be required to carry labels identifying country of origin. The proposals, if ratified, would become mandatory during mid-2007 but face opposition from European consumer and trade groups. TOP
Wool prices continue jumping
Wool prices this week further rallied in Australia and South Africa, as demand was boosted by lower currencies, better quality, a lack of supply, low stocks at textile plants and a return to wool in fashion trends. New York sharply rebounding ahead of rising Chinese demand
China is fast approaching its Lunar New Year celebrations and US analysts predict increased orders for cotton are on their way. New York futures have reacted yesterday with prices rallying following the previous day's low close. Activity in Pakistan has quieted a little with spinners attempting to ensure prices do not go too high. TOP

US apparel imports from China continued to fall with decreases in several categories. Shipments also continued to be affected by embargoes preventing any rebound. Textile shipments stayed strong with some notable increases. TOP

US-China Quota Prices already high in hottest categories
Quota prices began already reaching high levels in China. The same sensitive categories that were embargoed last year are now subject to highest quota prices. Indonesian apparel exports to get cash injection
Indonesian apparel exports to the US grew by 18 per cent in 2005 and could be further boosted by a government loan initiative to help replace aging machinery. Expensive freight handling charges are also being cut to stimulate business but the race is on to save companies from closing. TOP
China's T-shirt sales hit by embargoes
China's T-shirt exports towards the end of 2005 started to feel the effects of US and European embargoes. Shipments for the ten months to October were higher compared to 2004 but sales to important markets were lower than during the first six months of the year. EU imports from China could be embargoed as early as August should shipments remain at 2005 levels. China will need to ensure its exports are 20 per cent lower than during 2005 in most of the ten limited categories. EU imports of men's and women's shirts have seen again surging shipments from China which is set to replace Bangladesh as top European supplier in the unrestricted men's category. However, India is well placed to profit from limited Chinese supplies in the women's category. TOP
Taiwan's falling denim sales 'rescued' by Jordan
Taiwanese exports of Cotton Denim Fabrics continued declining into the second half of 2005. By October, shipments were 13.7 per cent less than during the ten months of 2004 despite lower prices. Interest for the products however remains high in the US, Nicaragua and in Jordan where importers bought nearly 300 per cent more than in the previous year. TOP
China exports of Pullovers slowed down towards end of 2005
Chinese exports of Pullovers have slowed down toward the end of 2005. Sales continue to remain higher than in 2004 but instability in the US and quotas in Europe have affected sales. In addition, Pullover shipments to the US will be limited over the next three years. TOP

New York's key March contract closed at a two month high yesterday. Prices rose from strong buying and a weaker US dollar. Trading in Pakistan remained modest following the latest arrival figures suggesting higher prices to come. Prices remained high in India yesterday despite lower demand. TOP
US embargoes have not favored Central America
Shipments failed to rally from Central American countries in embargoed Chinese categories in the last two months of 2005. Imports were below levels a year earlier in certain categories despite holding onto higher market shares. Taiwanese polyester filament fabrics traded healthily in the US market during 2005. Polyester prices could react to oil surge
Oil prices further rose Friday in New York, ahead of a decisive week for the Iranian nuclear issue. Prices however fell this morning in Asia after Saudi Arabia rejected any cut in production in the short term. Although crude prices significantly increased in the past two years, polyester filament prices remained roughly unchanged at the same time in China, on average.
