Denim Exports slightly up during January-July
Japan's exports of denim were up slightly in the
first seven months of 2005. Figures for the month of July,
however, show this to be in reverse after a slight decline,
especially to its major markets. China and Hong Kong accounted
for over half of all Japanese Denim exports. Prices rose slowly

Wool
prices further falling in Australia and South Africa
Wool prices were once again down this week in Australia,
mainly due to continued weakness in demand and a last-minute
rebound in the Aussie currency. Prices also fell in South
Africa as a clear sign that global wool market is threatened
by a new rise in polyester and cotton consumption. TOP

Imports of Men's Wool Suits go up slightly in January to June
2005
US imports of men's wool suits slightly increased
during the first seven months of 2005. China topped the list
of exporters to the US in volume terms whereas Italy made
the most in financial terms. Several US textile and apparel
organizations have now asked CITA to step in to investigate
China's surge in this category.

exports of W/G Shirts and Blouses increased during January-July
2005
Exports from China of Women's and Girl's woven shirts
and blouses have increased so far this year after the elimination
of world quotas. Surging exports were expected to continue
but newly filed petitions in the US could threaten future

Vietnam
struggles to compete with China's US textile conquest
Vietnam's performance on the US textile and apparel market
clearly suffered from soaring Chinese competition in the first
seven months of 2005. The country recorded only a minuscule
increase in its shipments to the US with Cotton apparel exports
actually less than last year. A deal with China is hoped to
offset internal economic problems and a faltering WTO accession

textile industry files new China petitions
Organizations representing the US textile industry
have lodged four more safeguard petitions on imports of Chinese
apparel and textile products. This comes just days before
a further round of talks to resolve the textile saga between
China and the US is set to get under way. The US industry
is hoping that this action will put pressure on Beijing to
adopt a more flexible approach to a deal.TOP

US imports of Bangladeshi apparel rose during the
year to July with cotton apparel exports strong. The country
has managed to cut prices in several important categories
but China reduced the gap. The government is "pleased"
with its economic performance despite recent large storms

Europe and USA
China's exports of Men's Woven Suits and Trousers
were strong during July with encouraging sales to the United
States, Russia and several European countries. Sales fall,
however, for Asian neighbors Japan and Hong Kong. Prices go
up slightly overall although actually reducing for the European

Imports of Men's Cotton Woven Shirts boosted by surging China
US imports of men's cotton woven shirts increased by an extra
five million dozen in the first seven months of 2005. Surging
imports from China made it the second largest supplier to
the United States, just behind Bangladesh in first place.
Indonesia and Sri Lanka increased exports to the US whilst
Mexico and Honduras rebounded from a poor 2004. TOP

textile industry files petitions to extend China safeguards
The US textile industry has just announced the filing
of petitions on several categories due to end on 31 December
2005. The petitions will extend safeguards on 16 categories
of Chinese apparel imports for a further 12 months until the
end of 2006. Petitions on other categories are being prepared
should the next round of China-US textile talks in late September

Turkmenistan
apparel hoping to improve on exports to US
Turkmenistan has announced investment plans aimed
to help turn around weak foreign sales of apparel. The government
has committed itself to revitalizing the industry and is also
seeing hard Turkish cash being injected into textile production.
Earlier this year, the US government confirmed interest in
purchasing more textile produce from the country. TOP

threatens China with Safeguard measures to halt increasing
imports
With China taking a larger slice of Brazil's market
for imported apparel and textiles, the Government has announced
the possibility of imposing safeguard measures. The debate
has been raging for some time now with industry associations
calling for tougher measures. The national currency, the Real
is growing stronger against the dollar making imports more

US imports of home textiles from China further jumped
in August, with Chinese exporters gaining new shares of the
US market. Shipments of fabrics from China were substantially
weaker in August by contrast, with their market shares being

Silk prices sharply rose in China in the past five
months, reflecting a surge in exports of silk products and
more demand on the domestic market. Production did not increase
in line with consumption and the international silk market

European Union imports of cotton denim in 2004 favored
Turkey and Brazil. Geographical closeness was also an important

apparel exports to US down but encouraged by China predicament
Mauritian apparel exports to the United States were
sharply down in the first months of the quota-free era, resulting
in reduced income for the tiny island republic. However, optimism
is high over benefiting from US and European restrictions

EU
and China agree to free blocked textiles
China-EU talks over blocked textiles has now ended
with both sides announcing a deal has been reached. The agreement
will now be decided upon by the 25 European Union member states
before the blocked textiles can be freed. At the time of writing,
no details had been provided of how and when it will work
but it is expected that half the impounded goods released
will be counted against China's 2006 quotas. TOP

Talks this week between the US and China aimed at
resolving the heated textile question had finished earlier
today without agreement. The US Commerce Department has meanwhile
announced safeguard action on two categories but again delayed
decisions on several others. A further round of talks will

Cotton
and Polyester Prices
Cotton prices Friday surged in China amid rumors
of delayed harvest and possible shortages, as a result. Partly
due to the same factor, New York's futures further rose on
Thursday with a new increase in exports to China in sight.
Cotton prices were higher in Pakistan, although the Karachi
Cotton Association did not raise its indicator. Polyester
prices were today unchanged in China on the eve of 5-day long

Cotton
yarn prices in China and Pakistan
Cotton yarn prices were generally lower on world textile markets
in the past two weeks, as a result of lower demand and excess
capacities. Yarn production is now expected growing at a weaker
pace in the coming twelve months, after surging in the first
part of the year. Prices slightly rose in China in the past
two weeks while being mostly unchanged in Pakistan, as shown

Home Textile Exports boomed in the post-quota period
Indian exports of cotton home textiles boomed in
the post-quota period, according to data supplied by India's
Texprocil. Prices rose on average with sharp differences between
products. Sales of cotton towels and cotton bed linen skyrocketed,
as India is currently benefiting from a series of advantages,

The International Trade Centre (ITC) is receiving
lukewarm response from the Pakistani textile and clothing
bodies as compared to the overwhelming response from other
textile producing countries, ITC Consultant Rupa Ganguli said

Govt
to procure 0.1m tons of clean cotton through TCP
The government has decided in principle to procure
100,000 tons of clean cotton this season through Trading Corporation
of Pakistan (TCP) to encourage production of standardized
cotton and ensure support price payments to growers, it was

market for cotton yarns contracted in July
Taiwan's imports of cotton yarns increased significantly
in the first five months of 2005. Shipments from foreign countries
however slowed down in June before decreasing in July. Imports
from India are in decline with cheaper imports from Pakistan

China increases share of US home textiles in the
first seven months of the post-quota era with an across the
board rise in exports. Pakistan resisted surging competition
from China in a few categories, however, with clear dominance
in pillow cases and sheets. India holds off Chinese competition

Textile
exporters get tax facility
The government has allowed textile and leather exporters
to claim input tax on materials imported or purchased for
exports goods to be shipped by September 30, 2005.
However, these materials should be in the stocks shown as
purchased or acquired up to June 5, 2005. After that date,
the GST has been zero-rated and refunds-rebates abolished
on materials acquired for exports of these industries.
A Central Board of Revenue notification issued here on the
other day says that no registered person engaged in the export
of goods specified below shall, either through zero-rating
or otherwise, be entitled to deduct or reclaim input tax paid
in respect of stocks of such goods acquired up to June 5,
2005, if not used for the purpose of exports made up to the
September 30, 2005: textile and textile articles; leather
and articles thereof; carpets; surgical goods; sports goods;
input of these goods.
This notification shall take effect from June 6, 2005. For
the purpose of any reference or interpretation under this
notification, the description and classification of goods
specified in Notification shall be applicable.
More than 150 items would benefit from this notification,
as read with the previous SRO. TOP |
