EU set for a final anti-dumping vote on shoe imports
Although rejected by member states in July, the European Union Commission has put forward a final proposal for placing definitive duties on leather shoes imported from China and Vietnam. Member states have one month to consider the plans before a legally binding vote which could result in five-year tariffs. TOP
Cotton prices down 85 points in New York
Cotton prices in New York yesterday dived down with the nearby October contract losing 85 points (0.85 cents). The market is struggling to remain active given little inspiring news concerning demand. The US Wednesday announced an agreement with the Philippines to cooperate on eradicating the practice of illegal re-shipments of textile and clothing goods. The move comes as part of a US clampdown on imports from countries suspected of rerouting goods made in China, subject to quotas in the US. A joint strategy is also being pursued by Congress, customs and US textile manufacturers. TOP

US Imports of Brassieres (349/649): China resists quotas
China retains the largest share of the US import market for brassieres in categories 349/649 despite being restricted by quotas. However, volumes have fallen while shipments from Indonesia and Thailand increased as did those from Bangladesh which dominated the low-cost end of the market. But shipments from Central America continue to struggle. TOP
EU First Quarter Clothing Imports from Romania
EU knitted and woven clothing imports from Romania were lower in the first quarter. However, the decreases were less severe than a year ago. Also, a move to higher pricing meant that the value of several items actually increased. Italy, despite lower imports, remains the largest destination. US Congress urged to extend Africa's fabric provisions
The US Congress has been urged by a coalition of trade associations, businesses and pressure groups to extend the so-called "third country fabric provision" that benefits African countries. The group is concerned that the present arrangement, due to be scrapped in 2007, will further reduce US apparel imports from sub-Saharan African countries. TOP
US Babywear Imports in Jan-May 2006: China consolidates dominance
US Babywear imports in January to May continued to increase while unit prices overall rose just a fraction. Shipments were dominated by China and with higher volumes saw its share further improve. Yarn Prices on the International Market
Prices of spun polyester yarns from China are sharply rising on the international market, as a result of the current surge in PSF prices. Prices of spun viscose yarns made in India are also increasing, mainly due to heavy rains that are disrupting production. Prices of cotton-acrylic yarns from India or polyester-viscose yarns from Indonesia are also increasing, as clearly indicated in our statistical Price Report. TOP
Viscose Prices further declining in China
Viscose staple fiber prices are now declining in China, in line with lower demand for viscose textiles in this part of the year. VSF prices could further decrease in the coming weeks, while filament yarn prices could be stabilized by lower domestic production. China's viscose exports began this year surging, after production declined in the United States and the European Union. TOP
US importers pay high duties for Asian denim trousers
US import duties continue to make their presence known on shipments of denim trousers from Asia. Over 16 per cent was added to the value of the imported items from countries such as China, Bangladesh and Indonesia. However, other suppliers benefiting from preferential market access saw less than 1 per cent additional cost. TOP
Caprolactam surge boosts Nylon Prices
Nylon prices are significantly increasing in Asia after caprolactam prices began surging in the past ten days. Chips, filament yarns and staple fibers should further rise in the near term. A new increase in oil and benzene prices could give more support to the upward trend. TOP
US Apparel Imports in First Half 2006
China' share of total US apparel imports declined in the first half this year, as a result of new US quotas. In addition to a rebound in shipments through Hong Kong and Macau, US limits mainly benefited Bangladesh, Indonesia, Vietnam and Cambodia. Central America was clearly on the decline, mainly due to gradual and very slow implementation of the CAFTA. TOP
China's exports of denim fabrics are less strongly rising
China's denim exports less strongly rose in the first half this year, possibly reflecting lower global production of denim jeans. Sales to a few destinations surged, including Vietnam and Egypt, while Hong Kong continued attracting the largest share of shipments from the Mainland before they were mainly re-exported to clothing plants in China. China's T-shirt exports grow despite poor US sales
China's T-shirt exports continued to grow in the first six months despite poor sales to the United States and the European Union. With shipments to these two markets limited by quotas, Chinese exporters have instead focused on developing existing and newer markets. Exports to Romania surged as a result. US Senator blocks Vietnam trade legislation
Fearing a surge in cheap imports, a US lawmaker has placed a delay on legislation granting Permanent Normal Trade Relations to Vietnam. ‘Instyle Pakistan 2006’ to be held from Sept 21-23
The 3rd International Textile and Garments Exhibition, ‘Instyle Pakistan 2006’ has been organised at the Karachi Expo Centre from September 21-23, 2006, industry sources said here on August 22.
Sources also added that the international buyers has been invited by the federal minister for Ministry of Textile Industry, Mr Mushtaq Ali Cheema to attend the fair.
Further it was cleared that the notable buyers who have been invited by the Ministry include El Corte Ingles, Kenneth Cole, Laura Ashley, Carrefour, Auchan International, John Lewis Partnership, JC Penny, Sainsbury’s, Kaufhof Warenhaus AG, Galeries Lafayette, Target Corporation and Zara Home.
However retail chains from US and Europe like Mothercare, NEXT and Fruit of the Loom has already confirmed their participation in the fair.
During the year 2006, the textile and garment industry has contributed 62 percent of the exports from the country and around US $ 6 billion has been invested in the sector in last seven years.
The Ministry of Textile Industry, Board of Investment, Pakistan Textile Exporters Association, Pakistan Readymade Garment Manufacturers & Exporters Association are some of those who are supporting the event. TOP
